Grounded Negatively

How can we be “grounded” in a negative way? I refer to those character traits that keep us stuck, bogged down, and unable to move or make progress. We are not born grounded in any negative sense. Over our lives, if we are surrounded by people (i.e., parents, teachers, coaches, mentors, and friends) who provide no encouragement, support, or modeling of positive grounded traits—or people who openly model negative traits—we are more likely to exhibit negative grounded traits. These negative grounded traits limit our ability to be as productive, bold, or successful as we could be, given our inherent talents and acquired skills. We are slow to take risks and lack the ability to overcome obstacles. We are more likely to give up too easily, perhaps before our plans and goals can succeed.

A trait that makes us negatively grounded is an anchor. If you are out sailing, having an anchor overboard is not desirable. It slows the boat down, and it can get caught on the bottom and stop forward progress altogether. We must recognize these negative anchor traits and constantly strive to remove them from our lives or severely limit their use. Just as an improperly deployed anchor can keep a boat from achieving its full speed, “Grounded By” traits drag us down, stopping our progress towards achieving all that we can be, which is our full potential.
