jamaica

Upon arrival in Jamaica, I was alerted that one of the Destination Experience advisory board members would come to the airport and pick us up for the long ride from Montego Bay to Kingston. This saved us from an even longer bus ride.

We met up with Ron McKay and during that 3-hour drive, I got a masters course education about how the island was increasing tourism and regional business interests as part of a 5-year plan to emerge as a leader in the Caribbean on par with Trinidad.
And all of this information came from Ron through a clenched jaw as he was in a neck brace.  He had just had major spine surgery just two weeks before and yet, here he was traveling from Philadelphia to Kingston to participate in the conference. Ron described the sad story of his being involved in an accident on an airport shuttle and his numerous surgeries over the past 5 years to correct the injuries he sustained from the said mishap.

What fascinated me the most was his description of Dr. Kingsley Chin, his spine surgeon.

Dr. Chin has truly revolutionized some incredibly complex surgery and amazingly, does this on an outpatient basis.

This dramatically cuts down on cost and inconvenience to the patient.  Dr. Chin also came to Jamaica and spoke at the Destination Experience about the creation of a new model for healthcare called the LESS clinics.

He performs outpatient surgery and use YouTube to educate people about life choices and medical conditions. His LESS model for healthcare has inspired entrepreneurs to open LESS Institute clinics and promote a “less exposure” surgery approach.
He has performed many procedures that previously required inpatient care at a hospital.  He has built and sold medical device companies.  And he has a series of YouTube videos that provide education on a wide range of medical related topics. He has also written a best-selling book.
This broad range of activities truly is a renaissance approach to business.  One would think that being a world-class spine surgeon would be enough, but Dr. Chin embodies Fourth Industrial Revolution thinking by combining the physical, digital and biological.  He is teaching and yet by being involved in so many other areas of outreach, is constantly learning.
His videos cover a wide range of topics that go beyond medical advice like titles such as, “Create Your Own Happiness”, “Prioritize Your Fitness” and “Why You Need Delayed Gratification”. He is clearly interested in engaging with people to think holistically about their mental and physical well-being.
What about you?  Are you a one-trick pony? Or do you have multiple activities that all feedback to come overarching “Why” that governs your overall strategy?  Knowing your why makes it easy to explain the what and the how in context to know the purpose for the what and the how.
Dr. Chin knows his “Why”.  Do you know your “Why”?
