Grounded by Lack of Initiative

What does it mean to be Grounded by Lack of Initiative?

Sometimes a great opportunity falls into your lap. A path to success, all laid out in perfectly planned stages, is presented to you to execute. (Hey, it could happen. And if it does, be prepared to act on it.)

But more likely, you will need to take initiative to make your own opportunities occur. A lack of initiative is what keeps people from acting on a great idea. Have you ever heard someone go on and on about the great idea they had for a company or product but never acted on it? In such a situation, I like to ask, “What have you done to bring your idea to fruition?” In most cases, the person has done nothing. All talk, no action.

Does this describe someone you know? Does this describe you?

Any goal or dream worth chasing will involve some sacrifice. You must plan out the steps to get from idea to completed project. That means researching what those steps are and what it will take for each step to be achieved. You will probably need to make some financial decisions about what you are willing to budget to make your project a reality. Perhaps you will need to engage with others to find some resources along the way. You might be working on this during your lunch breaks, in the evenings, or on weekends to plan it all out.

Frequently, when I ask what is preventing someone from achieving their goals, the reasons they give are actual excuses. An excuse is a reason that we pre-determine can’t be overcome, so we proceed no further.

“I don’t have enough funding.”
“I don’t know enough about this industry.” “I don’t have time to pull this idea together.”

And excuses are roadblocks of your own making. They can be overcome, but it’s a lot easier to simply not put them there in the first place.

Initiative is taking action, even if you make some mistakes along the way. Making no mistakes means you are making no effort; you’re not even trying.

Think of those situations where you have let excuses stop you, and brainstorm how you could have gone around that roadblock. At the moment you realize you are offering up yet another excuse for why you are not proceeding, tell yourself, “This is an excuse, and it’s not acceptable to use that to stop my progress.” Then ask yourself, “How can I get around this excuse, eliminate it and proceed forward?”

You might have to take a turn here and there. It’s unlikely your first plan will be the right one from start to finish. But make progress. Press towards your goals and dreams with dogged determination to succeed
