Once again, a great Brainzooming blog post from Mike Brown caught my attention. He had seen a Forbes story about the 13 habits of “exceptionally likable people” and rather than click on the story, he decided to create his list. You can check out the original Brainzooming post here: http://brainzooming.com/13-characteristics-of-a-likable-personality/25719/.
Here is Mike’s list of 13 characteristics of extremely likable people:
- Is comfortable with themselves.
- Possesses a sense of wonder.
- Is interested in many things and does not fixate on narrow topics.
- Radiates energy and a positive spirit.
- Has an open mind.
- Is adept at self-deprecating humor.
- Smiles at others.
- Instinctively knows when you need him or her to be around.
- Is happy to see you.
- Tells you nice things about you that you did not even know yourself.
- Listens intently.
- Laughs readily.
- Will go out of his or her way for you without mentioning it later.
So how do you fare in examining yourself against this list? The issue is not about being narcissistic, but these traits are examples of the Grounded In characteristics that enable us to be strategic leaders and make good decisions. Moreover, exhibiting these traits mean itmore likely that our co-workers or subordinates will be ready to go to battle with us, side by side, specifically in a crisis. If there are some of these characteristics that you are lacking, the good news is that you CAN improve each and every one of these. Start with #7; make a conscious effort to smile at EVERYONE today. See what a difference it can make.
