I had lunch today with my great nephew. He is thirteen years old and lives in the San Diego area with his parents and an older sister. He is a soccer fanatic and pretty good player. And he’s Grounded. He is articulate, well read, inquisitive, and extremely courteous. He asks questions–really, really good questions. Questions that make me think that he is a serious thinker and has a genuine thirst for information.
As a question asker myself, I greatly appreciated the repartee with the card-carrying millennial; he gives me hope for the future of this country. Here’s a great example of his Groundedness: my wife and I took him to lunch and told him to order anything he would like. He scanned the menu and politely asked, “Is there a particular price that I should stay under?”
Seriously, how many young people are thinking as levelheadedly as that? And bold enough to politely ask the question? Of course, knowing his parents as I do, it is really no surprise; his attitude is a testament to their parenting. I am hoping there are a lot more millennials like my great nephew. Most of the ones I come across are not even close.
