flightI boarded a Delta flight from Minneapolis to Nashville and like many flights these days, they announced that the flight would be full. I was sitting in the aisle seat and the middle seat between me and my row mate was empty. It even remained empty through the safety message. I was a bit surprised when the flight attendant who actually gave the safety message came and sat next to me. After chatting with her, I found out that she is a flight attendant-in-training. As I normally do, I asked her a dozen questions and she was gracious enough to answer all of my queries. She told me that the most interesting element of her training was how they simulate the different types of problems that could occur in-flight. They have a full sized plane that is used for this training and have “passengers” who act out certain scenarios. It is clear that the airline I was on, Delta (as well as other airlines) is trying hard to prepare these flight attendants for that one situation that may override all of their other normal, expected, in-flight duties, to prepare for a “black swan” disaster. More specifically, it appears that they want them to remain “grounded” so when something out of the ordinary does occur, they remain calm and work the problem to a successful resolution. In other words, Delta wants all flight attendants to be “grounded!”
