What is “Anchor Management”?
Well, there are three positive anchors: being Grounded in Calm Focus, Grounded in Thoughtful Response, and Grounded in Regard for Others. Conversely, there are three negative anchors: being Grounded by a Lack of Courage, Grounded by a Lack of Initiative, and Grounded by a Lack of Perseverance. “Anchor Management” is about maximizing the positive anchors in your life, while minimizing or eliminating the negative anchors. Using similar techniques to those used in anger management, you can take steps to determine if you are not positively grounded, and are too negatively grounded. Consider these five Anchor Management steps:
1. Recognize that your actions and words do not represent a properly grounded frame of mind. You can either self-realize this or someone close to you can point it out. You should empower a select group of people to point out instances where you exhibit negative traits. And if they do, listen to them!
2. Believe that you can be positively grounded in any situation. Remind yourself that no one controls what you do or say in any given situation. You must convince yourself that there is no situation that cannot be handled in a grounded fashion.
3. In a crisis, remember that calm focus is paramount. Take some deep breaths, practice slow breathing, or do whatever it is that puts you in a calm, focused state of mind. Be sure to think carefully about the “input” you are receiving: what environmental or external factors should you be aware of, and what specific outcomes you wish to achieve?
4. Decide if you need to act quickly, or if you have time to think things through. If you do have time to think, use this time, and be sure to think about a solution that aims to provide for the greater good of all involved. Don’t just do what is good for you.
5. Be bold and express yourself in a professional and appropriate way. Exercise courage, take initiative, and have the perseverance to see your project, goal, or dream through to completion.
Consistently using these five steps to “Anchor Management” will provide you with clarity, and will enable you to be a strategic leader who makes good decisions.
