I saw this sign today in a diner in central North Carolina:
I understand the sentiment of the sign, but I immediately thought how small and limiting it would be if you in fact adopted that attitude. Assuming you sleep for eight hours, you have 57,600 seconds of time each day. And you are probably doing something in each of those seconds. To think that my goal would be to do one thing in that time that makes me happy seems underwhelming. Trying to do something all day that makes me happy seems to be a bit narcissistic. I believe a Grounded person would find ways to be happy in the things they do everyday.
We have the ability to choose how we act and respond in any given situation. We can choose to be happy, even in circumstances that would ordinarily call for anger, sadness, or despair. Remember, there is a time and place for overt signs of joy. Cracking jokes at a funeral is unlikely to be welcomed. But, you can choose not to be unhappy. Choosing happiness in whatever circumstance you find yourself in, and not allowing people or circumstances to steal your happiness is a Grounded goal worth mastering.
